Southern Open August 22-24, 2008

Hi Everyone

The very next Atlanta area event will be the Southern Open which will be played at the Southern Athletic Club on August 22 - 24.

Briefly, there will be singles AND doubles. Entry fees are very low -- $35 for the first event, $20 for the second, and if you play Mixed Doubles as a third event, you can do that for FREE.

We are using R2Sports again (hope you liked it) as we got no complaints the last time we did. Here is the URL:

UGA Remembers Bijal, among others

Athens, Ga. – Forty University of Georgia students, faculty and staff who have died since last May will be remembered at the university’s annual candlelight memorial service April 29 at 7 p.m. at the University Chapel.

The service, called “Georgia Remembers...A Candlelight Memorial,” has been held each spring since 2000 to help the university community find comfort while honoring deceased friends, family members and colleagues.

Twenty-four students, 13 staff members and three faculty members -- Bijal included -- will be remembered in the ceremony. Each name will be read aloud, followed by the toll of a bell and lighting of a candle.

The names will be read by Connor McCarthy, president of the Student Government Association; William Vencill, chair of the University Council Executive Committee; and Shannon Scott, president of Staff Council. Members of the Arch Society will light candles

UGA President Michael F. Adams will make opening remarks and introductions. Southern Wind Quintet, a student woodwind group from the Hodgson School of Music, will play, and representatives of the Campus Ministry Association will offer opening and closing prayers.

The Chapel Bell, traditionally rung at this service, will not be available due to repairs on the bell and its tower. A large bell that sits on the plaza in front of Snelling Dining Hall will be moved to the Chapel for the service, then returned to Snelling.

On edit: 40 is an unusually high number to be honored.

Just a few reminders regarding upcoming events in memory of Bijal:

1. The Microbiology Department Service is April 18th, which is one week from Friday.

2. UGA Annual Memorial Service is either the 28th or 29th of April.

3. Tentatively, June 6-8, 2008 will be the dates of the Memorial Tournament.

2008 Regional Singles Deadline Coming Up!

The deadline for entering the 2008 Regional Singles in Atlanta on April 18-20 is rapidly approaching – it is midnight THIS Sunday April 13th.

Of the many ways to enter this event, we highly suggest doing so “on-line” by merely clicking here and following the instructions.

This is the very best and least expensive way of entering. You will save about $5 by entering on-line for this event and be assured that your entry will be exactly right (assuming that you don’t make an error, that is).

This will surely be the best event of the season featuring great play in lots of divisions and capped off with the Saturday night poolside Steak Dinner.

Late entries will also be taken through the same website, but for an added $10, until 2 pm on Tuesday April 15th.

The 2008 Motorola Pro National Racquetball Championships and USA Racquetball Adult Regional presented by Verizon Wireless are set for April 23-27, 2008. After a very successful event last year, Motorola and Verizon Wireless have renewed their sponsorship for the 2008 event. The event will be held at Schaumburg Tennis Plus, which is owned and operated by the Schaumburg Park District. Forest View Racquet Club will be the secondary site located in Arlington Hts. Schaumburg and Arlington Hts.. are northwest suburbs about 20 minutes from O'Hare International airport and 45 minutes from downtown Chicago.

Men's Pro Qualifying will begin on Wednesday and Regional amateur matches will begin Thursday. The new all Lucite court will be present creating the sports most exciting grand slam event in history. The event will be broadcast on ESPN and streamed live on ESPN360.com and details on other networks are being negotiated at this time. International players will be able to play in all divisions offered. The event will feature a Rock-n Roll theme and promises to be cutting edge. This year we will be adding an IRT Pro Doubles to the event as well as a Classic Pro Racquetball Tour division.

The event will offer a charity doubles event with the top 16 professionals on Wednesday evening. Cost of playing with a professional will be $500.00 with the funds going to a local chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Last year the event rose over $8000.00 and hopes to better that amount this year. The event will also benefit Prevent Child Abuse America and The Hopeline. 1. I went to the funeral in New York with members of Bijal's racquetball, laboratory, and poker circles last week, while the Microbiology department held a memorial potluck in Athens in Bijal's memory.

On behalf of everyone on that trip, I would like to thank the Patel family for their hospitality -- we were all incredibly honored to be part of the ceremony recognizing the end of Bijal's life. And personally, I found it really moving.

The 2008 Regional Singles Championships are going to be held at the Southern Athletic Club in Lilburn, Georgia on April 18 - 20, 2008. The initial deadline to sign-up for it is midnight on Sunday, April 13, 2008, but late entries (for an added fee) will be accepted until 2 PM on Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

NOTE: For this event, we are using the USAR's new R2Sports tournament software and are offering a discount of more than $5 for those who sign-up ON-LINE. To do that, use the link on the left side of this screen. Other types of entry (email, FAX, phone-in, and in-person) will also be accepted, but are discouraged.

I'm up in New York with some of Bijal's friends preparing to attend the service, which is tomorrow. Meanwhile, I wanted to highlight the incredibly nice tribute prepared by Erinn Howard:

From the very first days of graduate school, when Bijal Patel would organize his graduate student class for study sessions and social gatherings, it was clear that there was something special about him. He had an unmistakably caring and pure nature and wanted to succeed as much as he wanted his fellow graduate students and friends to succeed.
Bijal was not only an excellent mentor in lab, but also an excellent teacher in the classroom. He enjoyed teaching and shared his enthusiasm and excitement for science with his students. Never critical or mocking of his students’ progress or grasp of material, he only ever hoped they would understand what he taught and succeed. His caring and generous nature, however, went beyond the lab bench and beyond academia.
From being an avid racquetball player and racquetball club promoter to being a fantastic poker player with a quick eye, Bijal was very involved because he loved to learn about and try new things. He enjoyed skeet shooting with the guys and playing softball with the Seamonkeys team. He brought more to these groups of people than merely an extra player, he brought camaraderie, laughter, and a kind heart.
He frequently donated platelets and blood to the American Red Cross. When he was hosting the Superbowl, as he loved to do, or a Friday night poker game, Bijal was always inviting and always generous, making sure the favorite snacks of his guests were there.

More than a racquetball player and more than a poker player, more than a graduate student and more than a scientist, Bijal was a friend. Bijal was a good friend. And he will be missed.

Bijal Patel -- Funeral Information

A conglomeration of information that has recently become available: Note that this is an update from anything you may have read elsewhere in the last few hours.

From Bijal's brother:

It is okay if you wear black, just I didn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable if they noticed that we (the family) were not wearing black. Also, the service will be from 9-12 PM on Thursday [in Mount Kisco, NY], and the plan is ritual part of the service will begin around 10:30 AM (most auspicious time as per my grandmother) After the ceremony, we will go to the crematorium and have our final goodbyes in a chapel there and then Bijal will be brought into the cremation room and will be cremated. I guess I wasn't too clear about it with Ryan since I was driving at the time. Please make sure everyone know this.

Here are some photos of Bijal taken over the last few years. These are also on the Facebook group.

The first photo was taken by some kind tourist on the slopes at Cataloochee in North Carolina. It features Bijal, Chris Olmsted, Nicki Hendrix, Ken Bradshaw, and Arthur Bastidas. This was Bijal's first downhill skiing trip, but by about the 2nd or 3rd hour he was outskiing most of us.

I think the second photo was taken by Nathaniel "Than" Peck while he was visiting from New York. It features Ken Bradshaw, Bijal, Ilona Bostian, Ken's friend whose name escapes me, and Frank Cochran before a UGA game at the pre-game tailgate. I don't think Bijal missed any home Dawgs games.

Sad News -- Bijal Patel, Dead at Age 27

As many of you already know, colleague and friend Bijal Patel (at right) drowned yesterday
while on vacation in Florida.

It's hard to enumerate all the people who will miss Bijal. The microbiology department at UGA, where Bijal was on staff in the lab of Dr. Anne Summers; the racquetball club; the racquetball community at large; the poker circle, various random gatherings of friends; etc. -- Bijal was an incredibly positive force, and involved in so many different things at the University of Georgia, and beyond.

Originally from the Bronx, Bijal nevertheless made himself an incredibly involved citizen of Athens and a dedicated member of the racquetball club. He was in many ways the face and heart of the Racquetball Club, as he was often the first to welcome beginners and the most patient companion to them as they gained skills. He played at Ramsey, at the Y, at Southern Athletic -- and pretty much anywhere there was an opportunity to play. Just last week he competed in the State Singles, coming in as a semifinalist in the C division. Recently he was very involved in efforts to kick off the intercollegiate competition between UGA and other Georgia state school (Life, Emory, Georgia Tech) racquetball teams.

But Bijal will be missed, as well, as a friend and colleague. He was unfailingly adventurous, willing to try almost any new experience, and so in the short time (years) he was at UGA, time with Bijal included softball, skeet shooting, poker, downhill skiing, horseback riding, and many a Braves game. He was also unfailingly polite, and was an ambassador to everything he was a part of.

Details on memorial activities are unavailable at this point, but will be posted here as they become available. For more information, there is also a Facebook group dedicated to his memory.

This email is to invite you to the next two Atlanta area events – the 2008 State Singles Championships and the 2008 Regional Doubles Championships - that will both take place at the Southern Athletic Club in Lilburn, Georgia (and Atlanta suburb) on March 7 - 9 and April 18 - 20, 2008, respectively. Information on both events has been posted at the GRA website.

There you can find the applications (downloadable in pdf format) and links to the tournament websites. Please mark those dates on your calendar and then save and print the applications because neither of these applications will be mailed out!

We are using the TMS software for State Singles, but are trying out the USAR’s new R2Sports software for Regional Singles. Entering both events on-line is the easiest and recommended way to do it. Also, for Regional Singles, entering on-line will save you at least $5 over the cost of entering by any other means. We recommend that you bookmark both websites since all information about the events will be posted there including a list of entrants, starting times, drawsheets, and results.

Both events will offer lots of fun, excitement, and camaraderie with lots of high quality competition. There are lots of divisions offered in both so there is something available for all players of various ages, skill levels, and genders.

Because both events are well in the future, I plan to send out at least one more email reminding you of the events as their entry deadline dates (midnight on the Sundays before the events) get nearer.

This Weekend: UGA's Intercollegiate Racquetball Tournament

This weekend is a first for UGA Racquetball. The club is hosting Life University, Georgia Tech, and Emory's teams on the courts at the Ramsey Center. It is a first because the teams do not normally play each other -- technically there is no intercollegiate play in the state of Georgia. Through this event, the first of what we hope will be many, UGA hopes to change that.

UGA's top-seeded players will take on the top seeds at their respective schools for points and glory and whatnot. Additional team members will play in two divisions -- student and faculty/staff/alumni -- in round-robin play. All club members in good standing are eligible to play.

The event begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and goes through 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, so tell everyone!

For club members: A few people are needed prior to the event's start time for set up. If you are available, please arrive around 9 to help.

Brian Titus at the YMCA

First, many thanks for Bryan Titus for coming out into the hinterlands of Georgia to spend time with UGA Racquetball. A great time was had by all, trying out new equipment, playing challenge games, getting pointers and coaching, and enjoying the epic match-up between Titus and Dave Edwards late in the evening.

For those who missed the (awesome) Ramsey Event, or just want another chance to challenge/learn from Ektelon-sponsored Bryan Titus, there is an additional visit planned for the Athens area. Hosted by David Edwards and the YMCA of Athens, Bryan Titus will be on hand this Saturday, January 19th, at the YMCA from 12-2. Challenge Court, this Saturday only, runs from 12-4 instead of the usual 2-4.

It bears repeating that the Challenge Court that normally occurs on weekends at the Y is free to all -- you do not need to be a member of the Y to attend any Challenge Court -- this Saturday's event included.

Also, anyone who'd like to purchase equipment from Team Titus or otherwise needs to get in touch with him can contact him through the webmistress.

Mitch Williams at L.A. Fitness January 21-22

Mitch Williams, who is the reigning U.S. National Champion and currently ranked as No. 6 on the Men's Pro Tour, will be at two Atlanta area LA Fitness Clubs next week to present a clinic and possibly play a short exhibition match..

On Monday, January the 21st, Mitch will be at LA Fitness Windward and on Tuesday, January the 22nd, he will be at LA Fitness Northlake. Starting times for both appearances is 7 PM. Flyers are attached for both dates.

UGA Racquetball Players -- want to try your skills against your counterparts from Emory, Life, and Georgia Tech? Represent UGA in the Intercollegiate Tournament, which will be held next Saturday, January 26th, from 10-6 at Ramsey. FREE!

The tournament is open to all UGA Racquetball Club members (note: if you're not yet a member, become one this week by catching up to an officer and going official) and will be structured as singles play over the course of the day in round-robin format. Players will be separated by skill level, as well as categorized as student and faculty/staff/alumni, so everyone will get plenty of skill-appropriate play. This is the first such event of what we hope will eventually be a quarterly, friendly tournament among these schools -- don't miss it!

Note: spectators are welcome and encouraged.

Santa Claus vs. The Jolly Green Giant – Play the Body Type!

Many of you have asked questions about playing players who have certain body types. For this 2007 Christmas Season, I bring you Santa Claus (Santa) versus The Jolly Green Giant (JGG) in a one game shoot out.

Santa approaches the court with his Ektelon Backpack slung over his shoulder. Chris Cringle is neatly embroidered for all to see. He comes dressed in his traditional racquetball attire. Starting with his Ektelon T9 Roadsters (black & red), he also sports the Racquetworld.com Red Dry Fit shirt with matching headband. He gently removes his specs and puts on a pair of Ektelon’s More Game All Court. What a smart choice by Santa…he uses the other multi-lenses flying his sleigh, going down soot filled chimneys, or laying on the beach Dec 26th in Disney. Here is a player prepared for anything. He slips into an Ektelon Classic Pro Glove and pops the top of a Penn Ballistic (red) ball can. He enters the court and starts to warm up.

You can “feel” the 2nd player approaching as the ground begins to shake. I can hear some booing from the crowd. It sounds like a lot of spectators were forced to eat all their vegetables. The Jolly Green Giant unloads a huge Head Tour Bag. He must be carrying a week’s supply of clothes in there. He unpacks the new light-weight Head Sonic 900s sneakers. He’s going for speed out there today. The Giant got 1 of the last Racquetworld.com Green Dry Fit shirts with matching headband. (thank God both contenders chose to wear their sponsor’s outfit – or the story would end here.) The JGG sports the E-Force Dual Focus Eyeguards and the Head Renegade Glove. He pops the top of a Pro Penn (green) ball, enters the court, stares down Santa and finally begins to warm up.

This looks like it will be your traditional match up. Santa is your traditional, short wide-body. Santa may not look fast, but don’t discount quickness. He trains all year going up and down chimneys so stamina should not be an issue in this case like with many normal larger players. Santa’s court range may not be perfect, but with such a large player in the JGG, Santa should be able to read his shots well enough to get an early step in the right direction.

The Jolly Green Giant is lean and mean out there. His reach is nearly from wall to wall with only a step or two. In recent year, his back has been giving him problems and like many tall players, getting down low time after time may prove to be an issue…especially later in the game. The JGG will use his massive leverage to add zip to those passing shots.

The weapons are being unveiled. Santa has chosen the Ektelon 03 Copper…all plugs installed and upgraded with the highly toted Technifibre string. It’s a slightly heavier racquet for the older player…great choice. The Giant has chosen the Head Extreme 170. I guess with his healthy lifestyle he feels young and powerful and wants to add a touch of control to his game.
I can see a problem brewing already. Santa is insisting on playing with the Penn Ballistic (red) ball and the JGG isn’t going for it. He knows how hard it will be to see that ball go by a guy dressed in red. He counters with the Pro Penn (green) ball. Santa isn’t taking that bait from a guy dressed and colored green. It looks like a stalemate. Wait…here comes the Grinch…High Definition balls (dark purple) in hand. Both players nod in agreement and we’re finally ready to learn something.

Santa wins the serve with a nice lag to the short line.

Its obvious Santa has read the serving articles (1 and 2). He’s right handed and he moves slightly off center toward the right hand sidewall. Santa is fresh and his feet and body say backhand drive serve. However he changes the racquet angle at the last second and slides a serve down the forehand line. The JGG took the bait and once a big man is moving in one direction it’s tough for them to recover. 1-0 Santa…and the crowd goes wild!!

The JGG settles down and uses he reach to retrieve most ace attempts by Santa…he gets them to the ceiling…pulling Santa out of center court. Santa will have to move to the nick ace serve…all or short against the big guy. The two banter back and forth and we rejoin the action at 3 serves 2 with the JGG serving a second serve hard Z to Santa’s backhand. Guys with Santa’s build have a harder time pivoting around and tracking balls with angle and spin. Santa’s feet aren’t behind the passing shot and the JGG’s reach puts this one away.

The JGG is using drive serves and passing shots to take advantage of the limit reach Santa has. He’s moving Santa around the court by keeping the ball away from him. He uses ceiling balls to move Santa out of center court.

Santa finally regains the serve at 7-2. He takes a 30 second time out to rethink his game plan. Santa plops down right next to me and asks, “Pat, what would you do against this guy”. Not one to miss an opportunity, I first asked for a reprieve from the naughty list for the next 5 years…then I gave Santa the big man secret. Hit right at him. Big men use their reach and leverage to their advantage…take it away and make them bring their arms in to look all dangly. Hit jam second serves and jam shots. Instead of hitting away from them to pass, rip the first one hard and fast right above their knees (kid safe reference).

Santa stands up and enters the court with a small Santa smile. (its the all knowing smile he uses right before he tells you if you’ve been naughty or nice) The Giant knows something is not the same. He’s rattled. Santa nicks the first two serves. The JGG is rattled more. Santa rips a jam serve that the Giant was not expecting. The Giant swings awkwardly and misses getting hit with the ball. The sinking feeling is setting in.

Santa mixes nick aces serves and jams serves. He mixes pinches with hard drive jamming shots. The jams keep the Giant back and the pinches bring him forward. The Giant drops 5 quick points. We’re tied at 7-7…new game. The Giant takes a time out. You know where he’s going to sit. As soon as he calls time out, I get up for the bathroom…there’s no way I’m going back on that naughty list this quick.

The Giant moves to a lob serve. Santa, with his low center of gravity, has an easy time short hopping the ball and immediately regains the serve.

It’s later in the game and as expected the Giant is not bending as he did in the beginning. He’s leaving his serves and shots up. From the balcony, Prancer starts the chant “Put a fork in him, he’s done!” I heard those reindeer could get nasty.

Santa misses the next nick serve and hits a high lob to the Giant’s backhand. The Giant shoots and skips. His back looks tight. 8-7.

Santa nick serves to the forehand…9-7.

Santa jams serves into the Giants rib cage…10 – 7. (Pat’s getting a big present this year!)

(We’re only playing to 11 – International Fictional Player Tournament Rules)

On the last point, you can see the determination in the Giant’s eyes. Santa serves for the nick. He catches it on the forehand side two inches off the ground. The Giant dives…the ground shakes…he got it. The ball rebounds off the front wall mid high. Santa has the Giant trapped against the wall….he shoots cross court. The Giant dives again and flicks to the ceiling. Great ceiling ball...the Giant has time to recover to center court but in his haste to recover he’s not watching Santa’s shot…oh my God…39 foot dink roll out!

Moral of this story…There are no bad body types for racquetball. There are advantages and disadvantages for each. And Santa doesn’t lose at Christmas time. Wishing you all a belated Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Georgia Regional Doubles Moved to January!

The annual doubles event is going to be held next month at the Southern Athletic Club in Lilburn, GA, on January 11 through 13.This reason for holding the event then (rather than in September as we usually do) is that, from now on, the National Doubles Championship is going to be held in the Jan - Feb timeframe -- this year it will be two weeks after the Super Bowl on Feb 13 - 17th in Tempe, AZ.

Rest assured that this will be another great event with players coming in from all over the region to test their skills at doubles. Following are two very important links.

This one displays the application on your computer screen, which you can then save as a PDF file.
The other is a link that takes you directly to the usual TMS site which we will use as the primary tournament site. There you will find an on-line entry feature as well as other key data such as the draws and Starting Times reports once they are prepared.

Intercollegiate Exhibition

If we host it, will they come? Apparently, yes. Approximately 30 players from Life University, Georgia Tech, and Emory came to the Ramsey Center this Saturday to join with UGA's Racquetball Club in friendly intercollegiate play. It was a huge success, beyond anyone's expectations.

The result? The schools found they have comparable playing ability, but a wide variety of experience, quality of facilities, types of recognition, and structures. And they are continuing this association with a series of intercollegiate tournaments. The first will be January 19th. Players, mark your calendars!

Pro Events: US Open Racquetball Championships

It was all smiles as the 2007 Choice Hotels US OPEN Racquetball Championships concluded on Sunday crowning nearly 70 champions in professional and amateur divisions.

WPRO No. 1 Rhonda Rajsich claimed her second US OPEN Championship in the Women's Professional division defeating No. 3 Cheryl Gudinas-Holmes. (11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9)

IRT No. 2 Rocky Carson won his first ever US OPEN Men's Professional Championship ousting No. 1 Jack Huczek in front of a sellout crowd. (11-3,7-11,11-8,11-6).

The newly formed Classic Pro Racquetball Tour crowned an inaugural champion as No. 3 Ruben Gonzalez took out No. 1 Woody Clouse in a five game marathon that lasted nearly two hours. (9-2,2-9,9-4,8-9,9-5).

The date for the 2008 Choice Hotels US OPEN Racquetball Championships was also announced and moved to an earlier date from the traditional November month. The event for 2008 will be held October 22-26 in Memphis, TN.

Intercollegiate Play: Emory, GaTech, Life, and UGA

On Dec. 1st there will be a get together between UGA, Life U., Emory, and possibly Georgia Tech. This will take place on Dec. 1st at Emory, with the exact time TBD.

This is a friendly competition, for club members only. We need players of all skill levels to display good sportsmanship and competitiveness. This should be the preliminary to an actual intercollegiate tournament or league in the future -- but only if we get good participation.

This exhibition event is open to official members of the club -- which is to say those who are in good standing with regard to dues. Interested parties should contact Bijal (bppatel@uga.edu) for more details and/or to be included on the event email list.

Bill Segal "No Frills" Doubles

Who the Heck is Bill Segal and Why is a Tournament Named for Him?

Bill Segal played racquetball beyond his 81st birthday. On June 15, 2006 he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Bill underwent surgery at Johns Hopkins. Despite the finest care he passed on January 15, 2007. Had the cancer been found earlier, Bill might still be playing racquetball. Donations from this tournament will help find a cure for this terrible disease.

From the Tournament Director:

There is ZERO play on Friday, the entry fee is very LOW and you have a GUARANTEE of multiple matches (see below), PLUS there is PRIZE MONEY in EVERY division, as well as the usual Concourse hospitality. Play will begin early on Saturday, and due to the number of matches with the round robin format we will NOT accept special requests. For more specific entry information, go here.

Due to the limit on entries, we will only hold spots for pre-paid teams. (Basically, this means that if you have not pre-paid as a TEAM, then you have not reserved a place). Please remember that each division has an entry limit. So, once a division is full, then it is closed, regardless of the published deadline.

Guarantee: Multiple matches: We are using a modified round robin format. Depending of the number of entries, in some events, teams might be divided into two separate groups. Group 1 teams will play each other in a round robin format and Group 2 teams will do the same.

Overall winners for these events will then be determined by a single elimination draw formed as follows: the team finishing first in Group 1 will play the second place team from Group 2 and the team finishing first in Group 2 will play the second place team from Group 1. The winners of each of these matches will then play in the finals.

As you are surely aware by now, the Atlanta Open is going to be played this weekend (October 12-14) at the Southern Athletic Club in Lilburn, Georgia. Ric Crosby has agreed to waive the late fee for those who enter by 10 PM on Monday October 8th.

Congratulations to David Edwards, who won the Advanced Division of the UGA Bulldog Racquetball Club Open Tournament.

Play continues in other divisions. The Women's Round Robin concludes soon, as does the Intermediate Men's bracket. In the Beginners division, Sean O'Kelley and Frant Majs are set to play the final round in the next few days.

UGA Bulldog Racquetball Club Open Tournament - Rules

The tournament officially starts Sept. 7th but I wanted to go over the rules beforehand.

The tournament is divided into 4 divisions, advanced, intermediate, novice and women’s skill. This is an elimination tournament but you are guaranteed two matches through a drop down in skill level. For example, if you lose your first match in intermediate, you are dropped down into the beginners division where you play until you lose.
You have 3 days once a round starts to schedule your match with your opponent.
You MUST reserve a court in your OWN name and not the clubs name. Use of club’s name in reserving a court will result in a disqualification.
Each match is in a best of 3 format, where the first two games are won by the first player to score 15 points wins, and the third by the first to 11. At the start of a game, flip a coin to determine who serves first (coin toss winner can decide to serve or receive). Whoever receives the first game serves the second. In case of a tiebreaker, the player with the most combined points in the first two games serves first. If the players are tied in total points a second coin toss can be made.

This tournament requires the use of protective eyewear and wrist lacer/string to connect your racquet to your arm. This is for your own safety as well as your opponent's.
Please hold up play and avoid any shots that may not be safe, either the opponent will be hit by the ball or your racquet will hit the opponent. In most cases the play will be repeated based on the skill level of the players, but if a player repeatedly intentionally gets in the way of an offensive shot opportunity a penalty hinder may be called (please keep it friendly and warn your opponent about repeat occurrences before arguing about penalty hinders). A penalty hinder will result in a change of serve or point score. A hinder or screen call must be yelled out before you attempt a shot for it to count. If you take the shot and then make the call, the call has to be ignored with play continued.
The games are self-regulated so please be honest, it will make the experience much more fun and rewarding.
I will send the pertinent tournament brackets today including an email list of the players in that bracket for you to look up your opponent at. I hope everyone has a great tournament and meets others they may look to continue playing racquetball with in the future.

Women's Pro Racquetball

All the top women players of the WPRO will be visiting The Sports Center in Fayetteville, NC on September 14-16, for their season opener tournament at The Outback Steakhouse Blast It Pro/Am.

This tournament is in its 19th year and has always featured great competition, large draws, and of course the Outback Steakhouse steak/chicken dinner on Saturday night, grilled on site by the blokes and lassies of the Outback. There is a special hospitality room for the Pros, and a live DJ supplying music and announcements from the quarters on.

This is a tier 1 event and will be broadcast live on Racquetball Online.TV. The Sports Center is a full service club featuring a glass back and upper side wall exhibition court with full stadium seating, and 7 other courts with full balcony viewing, and partial glass.

Outback Regional Doubles (at the Concourse Athletic Club in Atlanta on Sep 7 - 9):

1. Discounts:

This is just a courtesy reminder that PARTIAL discounts are STILL available. If you missed the first discount (which ended on Aug 24), then you STILL have time to get the second level discount, before the fees go up AGAIN this upcoming Friday (Aug 31); and, we will be enforcing each discount deadline (per the entry form). Please remember that your discount is tied to when we receive your payment, regardless of when we received your partner's payment.

2. Division Limits:

a. Men's Open is limited to the first twelve pre-paid TEAMS (i.e. with a specific named partner).
b. All other divisions are limited to the first sixteen pre-paid TEAMS (i.e. with a specific named partner).

3. Entry:

Entries ARE still OPEN: Please use phone entry (via: 770-565-4309), with a credit card. There is NO additional service fee for phone entries. Please note the on-line entry is no longer available. Although, you might not have even seen it, the TMS site has one place where it MISTAKENLY says entries are closed (that we cannot fix); HOWEVER, entries are still OPEN via phone entry.

4. Shoes:

Please don't forget "Shoes for the Homeless": Players will receive FREE entry into the Outback charity dinner by donating one pair of gently used indoor court shoes (more are gladly accepted) to benefit a charity for the homeless. (Non-players and/or players that choose NOT to donate their shoes can make a $25.00 donation to the charity as admission to this dinner).

The fine print:

This tournament follows USRA rules, and referees are available for final matches in each division. This tournament really is open to players of all levels, including beginners -- rules sheets will be provided.
For Men: Divisions include Men's Advanced, Men's Intermediate, Men's Beginner. Each participant may register in only one skill division.
For Women: Divisions include Women's Advanced, Women's Intermediate, and Women's Beginner. Each participant may register in only one skill division -- but women are invited to register additionally in the equivalent men's division.
This is a single-elimination tournament, which is played on your own schedule. Following publishing of the competition brackets for each division, you will have several days to schedule and complete your match. Following the match, the winner will continue in the bracket while the loser will have the option of playing a consolation match or continuing play in a lower bracket, as determined by organizers.
Referees are available for the final game of each division.
The tournament is completely, absolutely, indubitably FREE. So you have nothing to lose but your competitive match, and prizes to gain!
There are prizes -- they will be announced around the start of play.
Divisions may be combined if necessary. The tournament lasts until there is a victor in each division, and the duration will be estimated after the registration deadline.
Yes, you may join in on any Racquetball Club practice. In fact, we wish you would!

The Outback Shoes for the Homeless Regional Doubles Tournament will occur September 7-9 at the Concourse Athletic Club in Atlanta.

Michael Kaufman and the Concourse Athletic Club have teamed up once again with the OUTBACK Steakhouse (Dunwoody at Perimeter Place) to once again bring this year's Regional Doubles to the racquetball community. This event will benefit the homeless in the greater Atlanta area as well as give the region's best doubles players a showcase for their talents.

Why is it called the Shoes for the Homeless Tournament? Because for the low, low price of a used pair of court shoes, you will be admitted to a very special OUTBACK-sponsored steak and brew dinner on Saturday with live entertainment. Yum.

YMCA Challenge Court -- NOW WITH MORE PATEL!

David Edwards at the YMCA in Athens is wild about racquetball. And he should be, since he's the National Champion in the 60+ division. Those who'd like to take a crack at unseating him -- or even just getting a respectable number of points in -- are invited to try each Saturday and Sunday at the YMCA from 2-4 p.m. Few have come close, but many have tried.

Details are being finalized, but I wanted everyone to know that the UGA Racquetball Club is planning a FREE, fun, on-your-schedule open tournament to kick off the 2007 school year.

Tentatively there will be three divisions for each gender, with two games guaranteed (in other words it's a double elimination) -- and prizes! and fun! Open to everyone!

UGA Hosts the Citadel

This weekend, a half-dozen members of UGA's Racquetball Club faced off against the leathernecks of the Citadel. Word has it that the Citadel players like to play UGA because one of their members has a girlfriend in the Athens area -- but heck, we'll take competition any way we get it!

What were the results? There were none -- this was friendly competition. But a Saturday morning was killed and all players did well.
